•"I create the environment not a given thing".
•Though "I was born while I did not know it, I wanted to question my life once in the interior of the womb where light shined". 」

I wanted the space where was divided external environment and internal environment by calm light and embraced me gently like a soft nest.

I wanted to make light and a shadow, the emptiness of some invisible hollow space than the form that the eyes showed. When I entered into the space "Maman of the light", air of the space brought to embrace me.

As if I came back to the source before being born as a nest of Cosmos , I had a look again at the night view of Kobe; It is fresh; changed to be surprised. Rather than the form of the work, "the air of the space" which work in itself produced invisible space. I may call it a certain mystery-related space.

Rope ways Mariyo Yagi written by John Christakos
(Winds JAl April 1998 issue)
Yagi studied environmental design at the Kyoto University of Art
in the late 1960s.Works from this period, such as a wall with deep, smooth indentations for sitting and afurlined floor with hollows for people to curl up in, were attempts to create comfortable, personalized spaces in an increasingly generic, prefabricated urban world. These pieces reflect the flexibility of traditional Japanese designs, where paper-screen doors can be removed to alter the living space or open it up to the outside.
Yagi represents this fluid relationship between interior and exterior in the lack of clear bpundaries in her pieces. ”But on another level,” she comments,"this fluidity stands for the shifting balance between one's heart and the world outside.”
